What Is Silica Gel?

Silica gel is a porous desiccant material made primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Inside each silica gel bead is a network of micropores that creates a large internal surface area.

When placed inside sealed packaging, moisture molecules in the air are held on the surface and within the porous structure of the silica gel beads through physical adsorption.

Unlike calcium chloride desiccants, silica gel does not absorb water in a way that forms a liquid solution or gel. The beads remain in a relatively stable form throughout use.

Why Does Packaging Need Moisture Control?

Even after a product is packaged, a certain amount of air and moisture can remain inside the packaging. Humidity can also come from the packaging material, the product itself, or temperature changes during storage and transport. For moisture-sensitive products, excess humidity can contribute to:

  • Mold and musty odors
  • Oxidation or corrosion of metal components
  • Condensation inside bags or boxes
  • Caking in powder-form products
  • Loss of crispness in dry foods
  • Damage to leather, textile, and wood surfaces
  • Reduced performance of electronic components
  • Damage to packaging, labels, or cartons

Silica gel sachets help reduce moisture levels inside sealed spaces and maintain a more stable storage environment.

Moisture Adsorption Mechanism

Silica gel has a large internal surface area thanks to its microporous network. When humid air contacts the silica gel beads, water vapor molecules are held on the surface of the material. This process helps lower relative humidity inside sealed packaging. The actual effectiveness depends on:

  • Volume of the space being protected
  • How sealed the packaging is
  • Initial moisture in the product and packaging materials
  • Ambient temperature and humidity
  • Storage or transit duration
  • The amount of silica gel used
  • The water-vapor permeability of the packaging

No silica gel sachet performs identically under every condition — actual effectiveness varies by shipment and environment.

Product Specifications

Specifications are provided based on packaging requirements and actual product availability.

Please contact CARGENTRA to receive the current list of weights, packaging formats, and availability for your specific application.

Sachet Material

A silica gel sachet's effectiveness depends not only on the beads inside but also on the sachet material. Sachet material is selected based on sachet size, water-vapor transmission rate, durability requirements, and the customer's application.

Adsorption Capacity

Adsorption capacity depends on temperature, relative humidity, exposure time, silica gel type, and packaging conditions. Please contact CARGENTRA to receive the technical specification for each product code.

How Do Silica Gel and Container Desiccants Differ?

Usage environment

Silica Gel: Mainly used inside sealed packaging

CaCl₂: Used inside containers or areas with a high moisture load

Mechanism

Silica Gel: Physical adsorption

CaCl₂: Absorbs and holds a larger volume of moisture

Scale of control

Silica Gel: Suited to boxes, bags, bottles, cases, or product packaging

CaCl₂: Suited to containers and long transport journeys

State after absorption

Silica Gel: Beads remain in a relatively stable form

CaCl₂: Material may gradually convert from powder to gel

Primary use

Silica Gel: Protecting moisture-sensitive products and components

CaCl₂: Helping reduce the risk of container rain

Product selection depends on the volume of the space, moisture load, how sealed the packaging is, and how moisture-sensitive the goods are.

How to Choose the Right Sachet Weight

The sachet weight should not be chosen based solely on the product's weight inside the packaging. Sizing should take into account:

  • Packaging size and volume
  • How sealed the bag, box, or bottle is
  • Water-vapor permeability of the packaging material
  • Initial moisture level of the product
  • Required protection duration
  • Temperature and humidity conditions
  • How often the packaging is opened
  • How moisture-sensitive the goods are

How to Use

  1. 1Determine the correct specification based on packaging volume and the product being protected.
  2. 2Only open the outer bag containing the silica gel sachets right before use.
  3. 3Place the silica gel sachet inside the packaging, avoiding sharp edges that could puncture it.
  4. 4Seal the packaging as soon as possible after placing the desiccant sachet.
  5. 5Store any unused silica gel in sealed packaging.
  6. 6Do not use sachets that are torn, punctured, contaminated, or of unclear condition.

Safety Notes

  • Do not eat
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Do not cut or tear the sachet
  • Do not let beads fall directly onto the product
  • Do not use a damaged sachet
  • Follow the supplier's handling instructions
  • This desiccant product is not food
For food, pharmaceutical, and supplement applications: only use a specification with safety documentation, sachet material, and paperwork appropriate for the specific application.
