Comparing Container Desiccant, Silica Gel, and Clay Desiccant

Three solutions, three usage environments

Hanging container desiccants use Calcium Chloride (CaCl₂) technology, designed for container-scale spaces with a high moisture load and to help reduce container rain risk. Silica gel and clay desiccant both adsorb moisture through a physical mechanism and are generally better suited to sealed packaging — boxes, bags, cartons — at a smaller scale than a full container.

The difference between silica gel and clay desiccant

Silica gel uses porous silicon dioxide, while clay desiccant uses mineral clay. Both remain in a relatively stable granular form after adsorbing moisture, unlike CaCl₂ which gradually converts into a gel. Choosing between the two often comes down to cost, the specific product code, and the requirements of each application.
